Key trends and technologies for digital infrastructure in 2019

Infrastructure and operations are increasingly being involved in unprecedented areas of the modern enterprise. The leaders' approach to infrastructure and operations is evolving far beyond technological elements such as data centers, colocation and cloud. Taking into account the type of activities helps to support and improve the business strategy.

“There's a dramatic evolution of Infrastructure and Operations right now,” said Ross Winser, principal analyst at Gartner, during Gartner's cloud infrastructure, operations and strategy conference in Las Vegas. “It's no longer about hardware or software, it's about providing services that meet business needs. The future of infrastructure is everywhere and everywhere, and will be driven by nature and by business.”

Top 10 trends impacting infrastructure and operations in 2019

  1. Serverless
    Computing
Serverless computing is an emerging software architecture pattern that promises to eliminate the need for infrastructure administration and provisioning, so there is no need for the user to explicitly provision or manage the infrastructure. One of the most important features is its fast scaling.
There are different AWS cloud services that allow this operation, in addition to providing security.

  2. Artificial Intelligence (AI)
    Impacts
According to Gartner, the commercial value derived from global AI will reach nearly $3.9 trillion by 2022.
AI will begin to be involved in fault recognition, predictive analysis and other functions within Infrastructure and Operations, allowing the IT team to develop more and more quickly in their daily activities.

  3. Network Agility
    The network
underpins and enables everything that IT and the business rely on cloud services, IoT, cutting-edge services, and will continue to do so in the future. Network teams have focused a lot on increasing availability, with major improvements.
As the cloud's increasing maturity emphasizes the network, and the scale of “things” and endpoints grows, networks must evolve to support the management of these evolving needs.

  4. Death of the Data Center
Gartner predicts that by 2025, 80% of companies will close their traditional data centers.
“Organizations need to create an environment that houses a more agile infrastructure both on-premises and in the cloud, whose critical time frame is 2021 to 2025,” said Winser.

  5. Edge
    computing Edge
computing allows workloads to be located closer to the customer to solve a specific business problem. Studies show that web-oriented businesses lose customers after just 2 seconds of slow load time. According to Winser, edge computing can be used to reduce latency and will experience increasing growth to meet the demand for high-quality digital experiences.

  6. Digital Diversity Management
The management of digital diversity in accordance with the technologies used in the modern company. Some of the challenges that arise from this trend include “analysis paralysis”, maintaining accurate inventory, and avoiding exponential waste as a result of poor visibility and asset management. The critical time frame for this trend is 2020 to 2025.

  7. New roles within I&O
How Infrastructure and Operations is increasingly taking on the role of supporting cloud services, requiring skills in aggregation, customization, integration and governance. Compucloud is a company specialized in the cloud, which has an expert and certified team in the field, in addition to operating with a pay-per-use methodology.
The critical time frame for this trend begins immediately: in 2019.

  8. SaaS denial
“The switch to SaaS must be backed by strong Infrastructure and Operations support, said Winser. “Staff need to learn about SaaS from a security and compliance perspective, and to provide the business integration and service delivery capabilities that their business expects.”

  9. Talent management becomes critical
The organization still needs great technical expertise, but now it also requires better collaboration of people who can work horizontally across teams.
“The success of hybrid infrastructures depends on the talent behind it,” said Winser. The critical time frame for this trend is now.

  10. Enabling Global Infrastructure
Becoming digital at scale raises the bar for I&O teams and their partners. Leaders must identify the right partnership strategy to surround themselves with an ecosystem of capabilities and support.
